New York Rangers Game Schedule for NHL Season Info

The biggest NHL stars will come to Madison Square Garden beginning in October in what promises to be an entertaining season. We'll take a deep dive into the interesting storylines and games on the New York Rangers' regular-season schedule.

Who Are the New York Rangers?

The New York Rangers are a professional hockey team in the NHL's Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers, who were founded in 1926, were one of the Original Six teams in the NHL before the league expanded in 1967. The Rangers became the first team from the United States to win the Stanley Cup when head coach Lester Patrick helped the club win the title in 1928. Murray Murdoch, Frank Boucher, and Bill Cook helped the Rangers reach the NHL mountaintop in those first few years. The Rangers won a pair of Stanley Cups in 1933 and 1940 before a championship drought that spanned more than half a century. One of the NHL's proudest franchises regularly made the playoffs but couldn't capture the brass ring until former Edmonton Oilers great Mark Messier came to New York. Messier, who was an integral piece of the Oilers dynasty in the 1980s, delivered on a promise to get New York back to the top. Messier & Co. ended 54 years of frustration by helping the Rangers hoist their fourth Stanley Cup in 1994. The Rangers, however, spiraled into a postseason drought a few years later. New York missed the playoffs from 1998 to 2004 before finding their footing again.

New York Rangers Schedule

The New York Rangers will kick off their 95th season, hoping to return to relevance by steering clear of the off-ice drama that prompted a general manager and coaching change late last season. The Rangers are looking to bounce back from a strange campaign that kept them from the playoffs for the third time in four years. General manager Chris Drury made strategic roster changes to add grit to a team that was in desperate need of more toughness. Drury isn't expected to perform miracles this season, but improvement is the expectation in head coach Gerard Gallant's first full year in charge. Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Mike Richter, and Brian Leetch aren't walking through the door, but the Blueshirts do have solid pieces that should help them contend for a playoff spot this season. The Rangers traded Pavel Buchnevich to the St. Louis Blues in the offseason, but made shrewd moves by adding enforcer Ryan Reaves and skilled two-way defenseman Barclay Goodrow to give the club a tougher edge. Signing defenseman Patrik Nemeth will also help. Drury and Gallant have an exciting blend of veteran and young players to help make them legitimate playoff contenders. Defenseman Adam Fox, who became the only player in NHL history other than Bobby Orr to win the Norris Memorial Trophy before his third season, goalie Igor Shesterkin, and Alexis Lafreniere provide a youthful punch. Kaapo Kakko, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, hasn't lived up to expectations yet, but he has the pedigree to break out. Sprinkle in veterans Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome, and Mika Zibanejad, and the Rangers have a good chance to finish in the top 10 in scoring for a second consecutive season. Gallant's team will play nine of their first 12 games on the road. The Blueshirts will attend four, four-game road trips, including an early stretch from Oct. 18 to 25 that takes them to Montreal, Toronto, Nashville, and Ottawa. The Rangers will go to the Pacific Northwest to visit the Seattle Krakens on Halloween to kick off their second four-game road trip that also includes games against the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames. The Rangers have the first of their two four-game homestands at Madison Square Garden from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 when they square off against the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, and Chicago Blackhawks. Their second four-game stretch at MSG will begin before the NHL All-Star Break and end after the league's two-week hiatus for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing (Feb. 7 to 22). The NHL and NHLPA have tentatively agreed to allow their players to participate in the Winter Games. However, both bodies reserve the right to prevent players from participating if there are heightened COVID-19 concerns or player-safety issues in Beijing at the time of the Games. If players don't participate in Beijing, the NHL will release a revised schedule. The Rangers will play 10 of their final 14 games in the regular season at Madison Square Garden.
