New Jersey Devils Game Schedule for NHL Season Info
The NHL season is just around the corner, and the New Jersey Devils are gearing up to play against teams from across the country. Here's a closer look at the New Jersey Devils' complete schedule with key storylines and matchups.
Who Are the New Jersey Devils?
The New Jersey Devils are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League's (NHL) Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. The franchise was founded as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974 before moving to Denver and becoming the Colorado Avalanche in 1976. The Avalanche missed the playoffs in five of six seasons before relocating to New Jersey in 1982. The organization spent a quarter-century in Easter Rutherford, New Jersey, before moving to the Prudential Center in Newark in 2007. They turned into a juggernaut in the mid-1990s thanks, in part, to their famed neutral-zone trap. New Jersey missed the playoffs in its first five seasons but made up for it with dominance in the '90s. Hall of Famer Lou Lamoriello strategically assembled a roster that turned the Devils into perennial champions. The underdog Devils swept the Detroit Red Wings to capture their first Stanley Cup in 1995. New Jersey leaned on star goalie Martin Brodeur and Claude Lemieux to win its second Stanley Cup in 2000. The Colorado Avalanche spoiled the Devils' bid for back-to-back titles by beating them in the Stanley Cup Final in 2001. But the Devils won their second Stanley Cup in four years by toppling the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in a seven-game classic in 2003. New Jersey made 13 consecutive playoffs appearances from 1997 to 2010. The Devils fell to the Los Angeles Kings in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final before hitting a skid for the better part of a decade. New Jersey missed the postseason in eight of nine seasons from 2013 to 2021.
New Jersey Devils Schedule
The New Jersey Devils are hoping to make a splash with their blend of promising young players and offseason veteran additions. Although the Devils have fallen on hard times, there is hope they can find their way with Lindy Ruff at the helm. General manager Tom Fitzgerald has provided renewed optimism after infusing the roster with quality veterans this offseason to complement the club's youth movement. He added highly sought free-agent defenseman Doug Hamilton and veteran goaltender Jonathan Bernier to add to a talented young nucleus that includes captain Nico Hischier, Mackenzie Blackwood, Jack Hughes, Pavel Zacha, Ty Smith, and Yegor Sharangovich. The arrow is pointing up for a roster filled with so many potential difference-makers under the age of 25. The Devils are primed to return from the NHL margins and climb out of their decade-long malaise. New Jersey kicks off their 39th season on Oct. 15, 2021, against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Prudential Center. Ruff's club opens the 2021-22 campaign with a season-long five-game homestand. They'll also have a pair of four-game homestands (Jan. 19 to 25, 2022, and March 6 to 12, 2022). New Jersey will have a season-high six-game road trip in April that includes matchups with the Ottawa Senators, Dallas Stars, Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche, NHL newcomer Seattle Kraken, and the Vegas Golden Knights. The Devils will also play the day before the NHL Christmas break (Dec. 23, 2021, against the Montreal Canadiens) and New Year's Eve against the Edmonton Oilers. The NHL All-Star Weekend will take place Feb. 4 to 5, 2022, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas before the league takes a break from Feb. 7 to 22, 2022, to allow players to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
