The Avalanche were founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques, a charter member of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The Nordiques, who joined the NHL in 1979 following the NHL-WHA merger, relocated to Denver in 1995. Rebranded as the Colorado Avalanche, the franchise found immediate success in their new home, winning the Stanley Cup in their first season. The Avs added a second Stanley Cup in 2000-01, and have also won 10 division titles since their move.
