Buffalo Sabres Game Schedule for NHL Season Info
The Buffalo Sabres are ready to get on the ice against teams from the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference, the Metropolitan Division, and the Western Conference. We'll take a deeper look at all the notable storylines and games on the Buffalo Sabres' regular season schedule.
Who Are the Buffalo Sabres?
The Buffalo Sabres are a professional hockey team in the NHL's Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. The Sabres, who entered the NHL in 1970, have lost both of their Stanley Cup Final appearances. Buffalo and the Vancouver Canucks are tied for the longest Stanley Cup drought in league history. The Sabres and Canucks were part of the NHL expansion to 14 clubs in 1970. The French Connection Line (Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert, and Rick Martin) thrived in Buffalo in the early 1970s. The Sabres made the Stanley Cup Final in their fifth season before losing to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1975. Buffalo's Stanley Cup Final appearance jump-started a 10-year playoff run. The franchise made the postseason in 18 of 20 seasons from 1975 to 1995. The Sabres then returned to the Stanley Cup Final in 1999 but lost the big prize to the Dallas Stars. Unfortunately, the franchise fell on hard times after its second Stanley Cup Final appearance, missing the playoffs in 15 of the next 21 seasons.
Buffalo Sabres Schedule
The Buffalo Sabres hope to end a decade-long playoff drought in a fierce division that features the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. It might be tough sledding for Don Granato's club that struggled offensively and in the net last season. How realistic is it for Buffalo to dig out of its last-place showing from last season? Although the Sabres have some promising young defensemen, scoring and goal-tending remain giant question marks for a team living in the NHL margins for so long. So, what should we realistically expect from a team that was tied for 28th in scoring last season before trading away their leading scorer Sam Reinhart this summer? Did general manager Kevyn Adams properly address the club's deficient goal-tending from last season? Who can Granato count on to give the franchise hope that the latest rebuilding process might actually work this time? There's hope that young players like Casey Mittelstadt, Dylan Cozens, Tage Thompson, Henri Jokiharju, and Rasmus Dahlin will continue to develop. Granato also will count on 40-year-old goalie Craig Anderson to provide more stability between the pipes. It'll be a daunting challenge to return to the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Sabres will kick off the season with four consecutive games at KeyBank Center. Buffalo will be home for five of their first six contests before a four-game road trip that features a trip to Seattle to square off against the expansion Kraken. The Sabres will have two more four-game homestands from March 4 to 10 (Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings, Florida Panthers, and Vegas Golden Knights) and March 30 to April 5 (Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Florida Panthers, and Carolina Hurricanes). Granato's team will have a season-long five-game road trip divided by the All-Star and Olympics breaks. The Sabres will travel to Ottawa, Arizona, Colorado, and Las Vegas between Jan. 25 and Feb. 5, 2022, before a trip to St. Louis on Feb. 25 after the hiatus during the regular season. The NHL will follow an All-Star Weekend break (Feb. 3-6) with a stoppage from Feb. 7 to 22 to accommodate players participating in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The NHL and NHLPA reserve the right not to send players to the Winter Games if COVID-19 conditions worsen or there's a potential for increased harm to the safety of the players at the time of the Olympics. The NHL will create an altered schedule if players don't go to Beijing. The Sabres will play 17 sets of back-to-back games, which will surely test one of the thinnest rosters in the NHL this season.
